She asked me, “Can I ask you to draw a portrait? I would love to have something special to remember my brother by.” Unexpectedly, she added: “But, would you be able to draw him with his ashes?”
What would a world without these motherly depictions be like? Like a world without mothers — it just simply could not be.
Instead of looking for superficial esoteric meaning at the surface, or 'hidden' mysteries, maybe we should recognize the miracles in the very real truth and beauty of the work and let that inspire us. Maybe even to find our own place in the last supper, thus participating and continuing the story of revelation.
Technology may very well have marched onwards, but when it comes to the human condition, it is clear we know no more and no less today than those who were able to create such miraculous and sophisticated works of art as long ago as the iron age.
